Don’t Make Me Cut You!

August 9, 2005

Its thin, its stylish (aparently) but it does not toast bread.

what is it?

Its my new phone, my Motorola Razr v3.

First things first, let me get it straight that I didn’t actually choose this phone (I would have probably got a k750i so Ill swap if anyone wants to). I didn’t even see it coming. Dad just came home carrying a box of phones and accessories and there it was. You see, my mother and sister are on plans and now that the plans have run out- they get new phones to replace their 18 month old 3315’s as retro as they are (I have 2 and a half of them to get rid of if anyone wants to buy one). Anyway, as it happens, mum doesn’t need (or have the ability to use all the features of a new phone so I traded my 3100 and a few houehold chores for the new razr v3.

Im not going to go into detail about everything that there is to be said about the phone but I will give you the good the bad and the ugly of the Motorola Razr V3.

Good:
Flat and thin – can barely notice it in your pocket
Metallic case – quality feel
Huge clear screen – good for looking at pictures of loved ones (or playing games)
Good signal strength – works in places the nokia didn’t
Nice loud playback – Mp3 ringtones dont sound too crap. Much better than the IPAQ.
Good bluetooth strength -works even if I walk upstairs.
Little outside LCD – Lcd on the outside of the case, really nifty and good for the time.
Transparent menus – really nice menu look.
Nice big keys – flat space is well used
You don’t have to open it up to change to vibrate only.
Solves world conflict

Bad:
Rather big – Thinner than everything but wider than everything
Little LCD a bit unreadable in sunlight – Colours go all washed out
Bulbous bit at bottom – ruins the aesthetics
Camera is phone quality – phone camera style camera
Many features useless with virgin – half of the functionality is useless if you dont have a data provider (virgin prepaid). ie:browsers, email and IM
If users are in a “group” they cannot have seperate tone for SMS and Call
You have to make a loud beep if you want to change it into vibrate mode without opening it.

Ugly:
Included phone sync software sucks – worse than running quake on your washing machine
Contacts with multiple numbers come up as two entries – something ill have to get used to
7mb of storage space – why they have the razr TV ad locked in videos is anyones guess, what a waste
Doesn’t shoot down aircraft

All in all its much better than the 3100 but essentially its still JUST A PHONE, although you will be able to expect the occational photo going up here from time to time. I would have killed to have this the other day when I saw that mud cake at the bus stop.
